Abstract
This article aims at proving the prevalence of the surrealistic characteristics in Zakariyya Tamir`s first short story collection entitled Sahil al-Jawad al-Abyad (The Neighing of the White Steed).Although this contemporary Syrian author was influenced directly by the works of the surrealist authors like Sartre and Camus and Kafka, he managed to digest classical forms and customize western literary schools as well. Tamir was influenced by literary movements and thereby explained his national and regional problems. Ideas such as absurdism and death phobia and seeking refuge to the world of dreams and imagination are but few examples of surrealistic features which he has artistically illustrated. In this study we have first enumerated the most important principles of surrealism based on which we may trace this influential literary school in the aforementioned collection. It should be noted that all the eleven stories in the collection have been investigated to prove the prevalent surrealistic thought in this literary work.
