Abstract

Misogyny is an attitude or belief rooted in deep social, cultural, and historical biases against women, and throughout history it has been perpetuated through various forms of discrimination, violence, and subjugation. This attitude is widely observable across different societies, and its effects are not confined to the social sphere alone; it also shapes cultural life, literature, and even the legal and economic structures of communities. Accordingly, misogynyas a fundamental aspect of social inequality-requires careful investigation and analysis in order to better understand its social and cultural dimensions. As a literary phenomenon, misogyny frequently appears in novels and other works of fiction. Because novels have the capacity to reflect social realities, they provide an appropriate locus for studying misogyny and its influence on attitudes and behaviors. One work particularly suited to such an inquiry is the novel "The Black Glasses" by Ihsan Abdul-Qudous. Set against the backdrop of traditional Egyptian society, the novel offers a nuanced and penetrating depiction of human conditions and of how both characters and society view women—in other words, of the phenomenon of misogyny. This study aims to analyze the effects of misogyny on culture, society, and interpersonal relations and to illuminate the processes by which related attitudes and behaviors are formed. Using a descriptive-analytic method, the authors examined the selected novel to identify and analyze manifestations of subtle (soft) misogyny within it. The results indicate that Abdul-Qudous employs soft misogynistic elements to depict behaviors that harm women and, by creating psychological and social tensions, presents a realistic portrait of women’s situation in Egyptian society—women who are subjected to male domination and constrained by cultural and social limitations.
