Abstract

One of the trends in literary criticism is the use of an integrated socio-psychological approach. This approach includes theories that evaluate fictional characters, their behaviors, and their individual and social actions. Erving Goffman's stigma theory is one of these theories, which can be used to study the behavior and actions of stigmatized individuals. Stigma is the act of attaching undesirable labels to an individual by others which leads to the individual's isolation and rejection by society. One of the most stigmatizer events that can lead to social disgrace is divorce. Therefore, in this article, we selected a short story titled "Divorced Leaves", written by the Syrian writer Waleda Eto. This research aims to analyze the effects of the stigma of divorce on the stigmatized character, and the factors that contribute to its creation, using a descriptive-analytical approach, based on the "stigma theory".The importance of this research is that, on the one hand, it familiarizes the reader with the short stories of this Syrian writer, who focuses on the social and cultural issues of women. It tries to reveal a picture of the social status of divorced women and the psychological pressures resulting from the stigma of divorce in Syrian society, based on Erving Goffman's theory. By examining the characters in this story, it has been determined that social isolation and low self-esteem are among the most obvious signs of stigma in the main character. Maher's mother—as a stigmatizer character—is a product of society's traditional view of divorced women, and she is trapped within an unchanging cultural paradigm. The idea that "we are different from them," is another stigmatizer factor that Maher's mother uses to attack the stigmatized character. In this story, Maher has a supportive character who uses "comparison" and "cognitive-behavioral intervention" strategies to reduce stigma and change the stigmatizer's perspective
